Specialized Transportation
Specialty items moving is one of the most challenging businesses today. Never has technology moved at such a fast pace. And at no time has the specialty mover's ingenuity and resiliency been more tested and honed. Cutting edge electronics, and super computers used to be terms that could inspire awe and fascination. They have now gone the way of farm fresh produce, they are now perishable goods. Today's supercomputer is tomorrow's antique paperweight. Today's top of the line cellular hand set is tomorrow's child's plaything.
Some things haven't changed though: all that cutting edge equipment such as medical diagnostic tools, next generation super computers, scientific testing equipment and specialized electronic factory robotics, etc. has places to go; and as with all brand new equipment over the decades, it is often extremely fragile. What's worse is that it is never designed with travel in mind. So now more than ever, it is the specialty mover's job to customize, improvise, and tweak new solutions to move a never ending stream of high tech gadgetry and machinery.
Equipment on the cutting edge is often purpose built, and that purpose is never portability. Portability comes later when they understand the technology better and can aspire to shrink it and make it more physically robust. When you think about it, a lot of technology which has been around for some time still poses real logistics problems for movers. Take for instance refrigerators, as with the models of old, they need to be moved upright, and apart from tiny useless wheels there has been no effort to improve the portability situation over the years. With cutting edge technologies, the situation is far worse.
The fact is though, that bigger players simply can't wait that long. Specialty movers have to deal with equipment that is cumbersome, often odd in shape, ridiculously sensitive to heat, dust, moisture and vibration, and which often needs to be moved by air, then by land; or by sea then by land. Unlike technology companies that spend years developing their products in secrecy, the specialty mover has virtually no lead time to customize a solution. Often machines need to be delivered to inaccessible areas. As such specialty movers need to employ pools of experts. And have a huge array of tools available to do any job that might come up.
Along with having to address the moving needs of the high tech world, specialty movers still need to do the things they have always done so well over the years. Like moving priceless relics, and antique collections; vintage car an motorcycle collections, museum displays, and the like. After all this time and practice though, it is a comforting notion that specialty item moving has virtually reached the level of art form, and today's practitioners are more skillful than ever.
