What Not to Have Your Reston Movers Move

The thing that we prefer to remember when it comes to moving possessions for a client is that practically everything they pack has a memory that is important to them. That is why when you look for a moving company in Reston, you must take care to find one that can respect your things as private items and not just objects and furniture.

For this same reason, there are some things that you just don’t want to leave to a moving company to transport. There are also things that are simply too valuable or of too much importance, either in business or personal terms, to leave out of your sight. However, there are also a few things that movers hate to see included on their inventory list. We’ve compiled a list of things you wouldn’t, couldn’t and shouldn’t load onto a moving truck.

Chemicals

It would be irresponsible to load a box of household chemicals onto a loading truck when something as casual as a sudden stop could send the box spilling over. That could cause a serious accident. Chemicals such as those used in darkrooms, in swimming pools or which can leak from car batteries shouldn’t be included and should either be disposed of safely or transported by the client privately.

Flammable Liquids

The same goes for flammable liquids like kerosene for lamps, fluid for lighters even nail polish remover. Once again, the slightest spark caused by friction could cause a blaze.

Garden Pesticides

Pesticides and fertilizer that are used in the garden are toxic, but the truth is there is no reason at all to put these onto a moving truck. Better to dispose of them safely also, or bring them privately.

Weapons

If you have weapons, either knives or guns, then they should stay with you at all times. Permits and other paperwork must also be with you. Never move a loaded weapon. Instead, put them in a pelican box or disassemble it to ensure nothing can happen.

Perishables

It doesn’t make too much sense to load vegetables, meat and dairy produce onto a moving truck. If your move is local, then there should be plenty of room in your car. If it’s long distance, then they’ll only go rotten. An idea is to cook it all, then offer a buffet to your Reston moving company’s team – they’ll really appreciate it!

Plants

Some plants may be moveable, particularly the larger ones, but if you have a wide range of smaller plants that will be too awkward to store away, then it’s better to either sell them or give them to neighbors.

Computers

These are expensive and fragile. Most moving companies will be happy to load them, especially if they are in their original boxes, but you may feel more comfortable keeping them with you.

Valuables

Items like jewelry or smaller pieces of art or sculpture could be highly valuable, and the last thing you’ll want is to lose them or see them damaged. For your own peace of mind, you should transport these items privately.

Financial and Business

Work documents, financial statement, bills and investment details should all be included in a box to be transported by you. That’s the sensible thing to opt for.

Personal

Lastly, family or personal items such as photo albums or family DVDs and CDs, should be kept with you. Although they might not break the bank if they were lost, the sentimental value is huge. Keep these items close too.

We at Topline Moving & Storage would urge you not to underestimate the honesty and professionalism of your Reston moving company. But, let’s face it; there are certain things you wouldn’t let your own mother carry. That’s why you should also prepare to carry at least a few items with you, whether they are dangerous or simply too valuable.
