Preparing Furniture for your Laurel Movers

There is a tendency to think that furniture is the one item that you leave for the movers to deal with. We’ve all seen them carrying the chest of drawers, living room table and cabinet into their truck, but the truth is that disassembling a piece of furniture (when its possible) and packing them away is the preferred way. Your Laurel moving company will appreciate it greatly if you can prepare your furniture for the move before the movers get there. We’ve compiled a list of how you can go about doing that.

Identify Which Furniture to Disassemble

The first thing to do is take a careful look at all of the major items of furniture to be moved and find out which of them can be disassembled. Often it’s simply a case of taking the legs off, but some types of table can have their tops removed and some drawers. Once you have done that, make a detailed list of the items to be taken apart, including the pieces to be removed and where to put them.

Wrap and Identify

When you remove a leg, or door or drawer, be sure to wrap them with care. Perhaps they are chrome or wood, but the material doesn’t matter. Once they are wrapped, write clearly on the packaging where they came from. You’d be amazed how easy it is to lose the leg of a cabinet! Number each item, perhaps giving their location too, for example, 1. left back leg, 2. left front leg etc. Being detailed is important in this area.

Protect the Furniture

It’s a good idea to add protection to items too. For wooden items, wax the surface heavily to protect against scratches. For glass tops, remove them and wrap them in bubble wrap. Use cardboard, paper or even cloth and blankets to protect surfaces and don’t allow tape to stick directly on a surface (especially paint) as it will probably take the paint with it when it is removed again. When it comes to securing them, use thick, sturdy string for smaller items but rope for larger items.

Use Cushions

If you have cushions, just place them in a bag to protect them, but don’t be afraid to use them for cushioning in the truck. Your Laurel moving company will probably use them away, but it’s a good idea to have them ready and protected.

Plastic Bags and Permanent Marker

Obviously, pegs, nuts, bolts and screws will have to be stored carefully so as not to lose them. Be meticulous when you do this; haven’t we all assembled something only to find that one extra screw left over, and we don’t know where it should go! Put them into a bag and on the bag write clearly where the contents belong to. It would also be a good idea to secure the bags to the main body of the furniture. Use duck tape and attach them well, since you don’t want them to drop off.

These steps in preparing furniture for a move can help save a lot of time when it comes to your Laurel movers packing everything onto the truck.
