A new way to protect your Columbia Move

Moving is something that most people avoid doing as much as possible. A move is typically an act considered a necessary evil. Most people don’t know a whole lot about moving, and even less about moving insurance. Luckily there are a lot of professional moving companies in Columbia who can take care of your moving needs. In addition, established Columbia movers now offer a means to protect your shipment, which was not available in the not too recent past.

Most people are extremely shocked when they first learn exactly how they will be compensated should a mover accidentally lose or damage one or a few of their belongings. A lot of unfortunate souls only learn the harsh reality after something has been lost or broken, and they are told exactly what they will get for it. As you may have guessed by now, the amount isn’t much. So if you are planning a to hire a Columbia moving company for a move sometime soon, read on; and consider yourself lucky that you will learn what you are about to learn before something bad has actually happened.

The general term for the protection Columbia moving companies provide is mover’s valuation. Mover’s valuation is an obligation and is mandated by law. While it is great that the law provides any protection at all, the actual amount of protection required by law is decidedly disheartening.

Released valuation, also know as basic liability, is the plain vanilla no frills version of mover’s valuation. Under released valuation, a mover will weigh each item in your shipment and will provide an itemized list on the bill of lading which actually reflects the weight of each individual item. Items are then “protected” according to their individual weights. The amount is pretty standard; it’s thirty cents for short distance moves and sixty cents for long distance moves. As a concrete example, if you have a $400 desktop PC which ways about 20 lbs., and your mover losses it somewhere along the way, you will get a mere $6 for it for a short distance move or $12 for it, if it is a long range move. That would be a pretty rotten deal in anybody’s book.

Happily many Columbia moving companies now offer something called full value protection. It does come at an extra cost but it is better in so many ways. For starters, the value of protection per pound is increased to a minimum of $4 per pound. Far more important than that however is he role weight now plays in the equation.

Under released valuation, each item’s weight is listed individually, and is used to compute for the value of compensation should that item be lost or damaged. Under full value protection, the weight of the items is only used to compute the total weight of the shipment. The computed value then functions as a ceiling value, there is a minimum ceiling value of $5,000 this means that if after multiplying the total weight of your shipment by $4 and finding it is less than $5,000; the ceiling then becomes $5,000. The ceiling value is the amount you will receive in the highly unlikely event that a moving company in Columbia loses your whole shipment.

The best part is what happens in the event that only one or a few things are lost or damaged. This is where full replacement value really lives up to its name. All items will be compensated for at their full replacement value, or simply put; the amount of money it will cost to replace each item with a comparable brand new item. To extend our example earlier, should you lose your $400 computer you will not receive $6, $12 or even $80 (as computed by a factor of $4) . You will in fact receive $400 to $600 depending on what it costs to buy a new one. For as long as your total damages are below your ceiling price, you will be paid in full.

Hiring the right Columbia moving company is the best way to ensure a smooth, safe and anxiety free move. For added protection however, you can’t do too badly with full replacement protection. Be sure you ask your Columbia mover about it.
