Why it's a bad idea to use the KISS principle with your Chesapeake moving estimate
Sifting though moving quotes from several Chesapeake moving companies is not an easy task, you need to be thorough, meticulous, and patient. There are no short cuts through this particular process; this poses a problem, as most people prefer that everything be kept as simple as possible. That’s why people love value meals at fast food restaurants so much, they uncomplicated things. There are no set packages in moving estimates, the bottom line is not necessarily the most important figure, and the KISS principle (Keep is simple stupid) should never ever be applied when looking over estimates from Chesapeake movers.
Packaged deals are often marketed in terms of savings. Value meals at restaurants will claim that you save $1 for a package consisting of a burger, a Coke and French fries by getting them as a value meal as opposed to as individual items. In the end though the main draw of the value meal isn’t price; it’s convenience. People want to know how much they need to spend in total. Instead of having to do quick math in their heads, they would rather just look at a value meal and say, “I want a number 3”. A lot of people don’t even bother to see that they actually want everything on the value meal or if there are really any savings as opposed to buying the items individually. Just the convenience of paying one price for one meal is reason enough to go with a set package.
This type of thinking probably saves a lot of people a lot of time during their lunch breaks. Packaged lunches are relatively simple though and the items that go into a package are simple and unchanging as well. This is most certainly not the case with moving. A move has so many variables and so many details to work out. That’s why it would be simply impossible to give a moving quotation with nothing more than a company emblem, a bottom line and a space for a customer to sign.
A professional Chesapeake moving company will never give you an oversimplified estimate. There are several variables that can increase or decrease the amount you will have to pay, and the Chesapeake mover you select should take as many of these factors as are applicable into consideration. An oversimplified estimate is a sign of one of two things: either your mover is not very competent and simply doesn’t know how to properly calculate the cost of you move, or worse, you mover plans to hit you with all kinds of hidden costs on moving day. You’d be surprised at how often the second scenario occurs.
Your estimate should show you calculations for man hours, packing materials, gas mileage and the weight of your shipment. It should reflect the added cost of full replacement valuation (damage protection provided by moving companies at an extra cost). It should not have any clause which will bind you to the moving company when you sign the estimate. It should also have a “not to exceed” clause. A competent Chesapeake moving company will have no problem affixing a “not to exceed” clause, as they will have thoroughly assessed your requirement. All in all a moving estimate should be a document which gives you the most possible protection on moving day; and when you look at your moving estimates, that more than anything is what you should be looking our for.
