Preparing chandeliers for your Bethesda Movers
Of all the items that a Bethesda moving company can be asked to move, a chandelier is probably the least liked. The reason isn’t that it is too heavy nor that it is too difficult to take down and load onto the truck. The reason is simply that the delicate components that go into making a beautiful chandelier are hard to secure and very easy to damage. That is why your Bethesda movers will look for extra care to be taken with such a fragile and expensive item.
There are Bethesda moving companies that specialise in such items but it is certainly possible for a moving company to do the same job. However, while it is intricate, a chandelier can be prepared for transport by you in advance, thereby reducing some of the cost of moving by saving on the time to pack the chandelier. We’ve compiled a step-by-step guide to securing your chandelier in time for moving day.
Secure Loose Parts
As you know, a traditional chandelier can have many loose parts that dangle from the frame. It’s all part of the attraction a chandelier has for us, with ‘droplets’ of crystal or glass reflecting the light. These droplets can usually be removed, and if so they can be wrapped individually in bubble-wrap. They would also need to be catalogued or numbered to ensure that each can be re-placed in the right position. If you don’t feel comfortable removing the droplets, then wrap each droplet still attached. All you want to do is ensure they are cushioned so as not to break, crack or chip while in transit.
Secure in the Box/Crate
You can get a special crate or box to transport a chandelier. Your Bethesda movers should be able to get their hands on one. Be sure that there is sufficient packing inside and a polystyrene base that fits snugly inside on which to place the chandelier. Once that is done securely, you can place another polystyrene piece at the top and fill the space around the chandelier with packing peanuts or even tightly scrunched paper.
No Rattling
Be sure that the chandelier is secure inside the box before you seal it. You can check this by simply moving the box from side-to-side, listening carefully for any rattling. If you hear rattling then pack some more peanuts, foam or paper inside. You might also carefully pack in cloth or rags which are softer than paper – but ‘carefully’ is the important word!
Seal and Label
Once you are happy that the chandelier is secure inside, close the box and seal it with duck tape. Don’t forget to label the box properly too. There is little sense in writing a vague description when you want the Bethesda movers to take special care of it. Write clearly the words ‘Fragile’ and ’Chandelier’, and if necessary use arrows to show which is the right way up.
Preparing a chandelier to be moved is not a simple job, not least because of the delicacy of the components involved. It’s also expensive since the cost of replacing a damaged ‘droplet’ can be staggeringly high, depending on the quality, age and brand of the chandelier.
